It seems that this L-shaped cemetery is laid out in a grid pattern, and dates back to 1860 in an area at the corner of Battersea Rise and a lane called The Five Houses Lane. The cemetery still has its original cast iron entrance gates and brick gate piers, the gates decorated with religious motifs.
A number of tombs carry inscriptions relating to railway deaths at Clapham Junction. Among those buried here are John Burns (d.1943), Liberal politician 1892-1914 ,Henry Meyer (d.1865) the ornithologist who published 'Illustrations of British Birds' in 1835-43; Sir William Rose who was MP for Southampton in 1862-5 and Lord Mayor of London from 1862-63; William Bishop (d.1961) who established the Wellcome Historical Medical Library in 1949 and published works on medical history such as a Dictionary of Medical Biography; and Kaikhoshru Puntheki, a Parsee lawyer from Bombay who has a large urn on his tomb. Not your usual cemetry such as the local neighbourhood one in East Geelong - walks through that one have not revealed much information about the who and what- my notebook was handy.
I spent the rest of the day lazing in front of the cricket - which by now had got a bit more interesting - 6 wickets down and Mitchell Johnson finally got a ball or two to straighten!
Matt arrived back from NY and the three of us had a splendid dinner at Numero Uno, the local Italian in Northcote Road. Sublime food - Calamari Fritti, Fresh \mozarella drizzled with olive oil and basil salad\Carcofi (artichoke)Fritti and that was just the entree. I indulged in a bowl of Spaghetti Vongole (clams)... yum! and we couldn't resist the Tira ma su. The bottle of Italian red wasn't too bad either!
The weather has turned pretty foul - I lay in bed and watched the dark shadows of the trees in the cemetry against the night sky - the wind howled, lightning lit up the sky and a steady downpour lulled me to sleep. Thanks to some 'left over' snakeoil spary from Queensland that Glenn had tucked away - my knee has almost miraculously recovered - just in time for wallking in the Sussex countryside. I'm off to meet Yannicke (the woman i met on the flight over) at Gail's Bakery for my last croissant and coffee.
Will try and keep you posted after the weekend as i doubt i will be near a computer.
GO CATS!
